what is hemp biomass?
Hemp biomass is the raw plant matter ready for extraction processing. Hemp biomass is usually made up of the remaining organic material (leaves and stalks) after the flower or buds and/or seeds have been harvested from the plant. Basically, your typical hemp biomass is everything in the hemp plant that isn’t used to make other products. In most cases, only the mature, trimmed flowers or buds of cannabinoid-rich hemp plants are used to make finished products, and the remaining components of the plants are discarded. At Stella Moon Farm, our hemp biomass includes a lot of premium smokable flower rich in cannabinoids. Our smokable flower is selected at such a high grade, we discard as biomass what most would consider premium smokable flower.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF HEMP BIOMASS
Typically, biomass is usually regarded as “waste” in conventional farming, but not with hemp. There are two methods for collecting hemp biomass depending on what you are trying to achieve.
The first method for collecting hemp biomass is for the collection of oils and usually used explicitly for CBG and CBD production. At Stella Moon Farm our hemp biomass is made up of cannabinoid-rich flowers, as well as smaller hemp stalks and large leaves that line hemp’s stalks. We also include the smaller, cannabinoid-rich leaves called “sweet leaf” that grow near the hemp flower or buds. At Stella Moon Farm “sweet leaf” is commonly trimmed off our premium grade smokable flower for its high cannabinoid content and added to our biomass mixture. Our biomass mixture consistently produces high potency amounts of CBG and CBD once processed into other products such as crude oil or isolate.
The second method for collecting hemp biomass is for fiber, cloth, or it can be processed and converted into pellets and used as fuel or energy source. Called “fiber biomass,” this type of biomass does not contain very much CBG or CBD, so if it is made from CBG/CBD-rich hemp, it usually does not contain any flower, sweet leaf or trim and is made exclusively from stalks or leaves instead. By “retting” this biomass, it ensures the fibrous strands that make up the stalk can further separate to make further processing more efficient. Leftover hemp material can be harvested for its fibers, which are useful from a variety of industrial perspectives. The vast majority of fiber biomass, however, is not made from CBG/CBD-rich hemp at all, and instead, it is made from low-cannabinoid hemp strains that are cultivated for their seeds and fiber only. Stella Moon Farm does not typically produce this type of biomass.
